Battling the Sun: A Midday Beach Photoshoot Adventure

Ah, Florida—the land of perpetual sunshine, sandy beaches, and humidity so thick it could hug you. Most photographers (myself included) usually chase that dreamy golden hour glow or hide in the soft shadows of overcast days. But one day, I decided to throw caution to the wind and embrace Florida’s most infamous lighting challenge: the midday sun.

That’s right, folks. I ventured out at the peak of the day when the sun sits high in the sky like a judgmental relative, casting shadows that seem to say, “Good luck making this flattering!” It wasn’t easy, but the results were worth every squint, bead of sweat, and sand-in-unmentionable-places moment.

The Setup: High Noon and No Mercy

Midday beach photoshoots aren’t for the faint of heart. The sun doesn’t just light the scene; it dominates it. Every wrinkle, shadow, and pore gets a front-row seat, and there’s no hiding behind soft filters or diffused lighting. But that’s also what makes it so thrilling.

Armed with a reflector (which ended up not being used), sunscreen SPF 1,000 (kidding, but it felt necessary), and my camera, I set out to capture a raw, bold look. The goal was to work with the light, not against it—to let the harshness of midday add drama and grit instead of running from it.

The Unexpected Perks

Photographer’s Workout: Have you ever tried holding a reflector while sinking in wet sand? Let me tell you, CrossFit has nothing (okay maybe I’m being dramatic) on beach photography in midday sun.

Tan Lines Galore: Note to self—next time, reapply sunscreen before you start shooting. My left arm now permanently resembles a toasted marshmallow.

Connection With Nature: There’s something raw and primal about embracing the elements. Sure, I lost my lens cap to the ocean (RIP), but I gained a newfound respect for the interplay between light and the environment.
